Why muslim woman wear the veil?

In one of world most famous open interfaith debate, one female audience questioning Sheikh Ahmad Deedat that in Islam wearing veil is form of oppression. For her, why they (woman) have to cover themselves just because of weakness of men (who cannot control their lust). At the first place, the law is against human rights and proved Islam degrades women.
